Technical Area for the Italian National Team

The design of the Italian national football team’s technical area is one of the central elements in the renewal of Coverciano. The project combines the restoration, and extension of the main 1950s building with a new partially underground volume containing a gym, hydrotherapy pools and specialist facilities for athletes’ preparation and recovery.

Embedding the new building in the ground reduces its visual impact, protects the relationship with the landscape and allows a green roof to reconnect the centre’s open spaces. Inside, circulation, changing rooms, technical areas and spaces for players and staff are organised around precise operational sequences developed through consultation with users and analysis of daily activities. Natural light, air quality, acoustics and climate control support wellbeing and performance, while building services and plant rooms are coordinated to ensure efficiency, maintainability and reliability.

Studio Lauria addresses the project through a bespoke, interdisciplinary method that integrates restoration, sports architecture, landscape and engineering. The result is a contemporary, discreet and high-performance facility that renews the home of the Azzurri without erasing its memory, demonstrating the practice’s ability to translate specialist requirements into functional, inclusive and representative spaces.
