The restoration and regeneration project for Palermo’s former cotton mill follows the competition won in 2023 with Sicilian architect Alessandro D’Amico and Vedra srl. The transformation of the complex, intended primarily as a cultural hub, offers an opportunity to return a disused industrial asset to the city and create a new place for relationships, creativity and urban development.
The intervention recognises the value of the existing structure and its layers of history, avoiding indiscriminate replacement. The large industrial interiors become a resource for cultural, exhibition, educational and collective uses, organised through flexible systems that can adapt over time. New routes, courtyards and connections reconnect the complex with its neighbourhood, while light, materials and landscape transform the experience without erasing the memory of work.
The project treats regeneration as an integrated process in which restoration, functionality, accessibility, economic sustainability and future management are coordinated from the earliest stages. Reuse reduces land take and resource consumption, but above all creates social value through spaces that can evolve with changing programmes and communities. The former cotton mill becomes an elastic, recognisable and inclusive cultural infrastructure: a vast covered space beneath which volumes of different scales form places for learning, meeting and collective experience.
Aware of the challenges of globalisation, we draw on Italian creativity to develop projects that respect and enhance local identities and cultures.
