PORTFOLIO

Laurentian Library

The project for the Laurentian Library addresses one of the most delicate challenges in contemporary architecture: making a monumental complex fully accessible without compromising its authenticity, historic value or spatial quality. Restoration, functional upgrading and the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers are developed as part of a single enhancement strategy.

Accessibility is not treated as an additional compliance requirement, but as a principle that generates the design. New routes, upgraded services, devices for overcoming level changes and improved wayfinding are developed for the widest possible range of users, with specific sensitivity to people with disabilities. Every insertion is calibrated through a rigorous dialogue with the historic fabric, seeking reversible, recognisable and discreet solutions that guide visitors without interfering with the power of the place.

The project respects the monumentality of a setting designed by Michelangelo for the Medici family. In the Case Martelli section, the design was preceded by a campaign of paint analysis that led to the rediscovery of a significant cycle of eighteenth-century frescoes.

Studio Lauria contributes extensive experience in architectural restoration and museum accessibility plans, together with the ability to coordinate architectural, building-services, and management requirements.
